Puzzling our way through!

(Almost) New Year, New Puzzles

December 30, 2020

As the year comes to a close, we’re sharing a selection of winter and New Year’s themed artworks in puzzle form to challenge yourself with at home! Challenge friends or collaborate with someone in your bubble to complete these new puzzles.

There hasn’t been much snow in the Washington, DC area, but we’ve definitely felt the chill. Try your hand at this snowy oil painting from our American Art collection.

The White Pasture, Willard Metcalf, Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC: Gift of Charles Lang Freer, F1917.249a-b.

We’re hoping for an auspicious new year for everyone around the world. This Katsushika Hokusai scroll painting centers on the Japanese New Year custom of hatsuyume, the first dream of the new year.

New Year Custom: Wish for a New Year’s Auspicious Dream, Katsushika Hokusai, Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC: Gift of Charles Lang Freer, F1903.52.

Lastly, here’s a detail from a large hanging scroll painting in our Chinese Art collection that’s also part of our educator resource, Teaching China with the Smithsonian.
